A proposal for a major new hotel addition for Hard Rock Casino Vancouver in Coquitlam has received the required approvals to go ahead.
The municipal government has provided Great Canadian Gaming Corporation with a development permit to construct a 90,000-sq-ft addition that provides the casino destination with a 12-storey hotel with 141 guest rooms, 5,100-sq-ft of conference and meeting space, and 3,400 sq. ft. of hotel amenity space.

The design, by Chris Dikeakos Architects, is deemed to be pedestrian-friendly and provides circulation spaces linking the various buildings in the casino complex. A standard design of glass boxes and punched windows is envisioned for the hotel tower.
There will also be an outdoor pool with a cabana area for hotel guests, and an existing ground-level parking lot will be converted into a large-scale plaza suitable for public events.

Noise from Highway 1 and Lougheed Highway will be buffered by the creation of a large landscaped berm that doubles as a seating area facing the plaza.
The redevelopment was first approved by City Council in 2012, but the proposal had to be resubmitted following the casino property’s Hard Rock rebranding in 2013 and the resulting design implications from meeting the global casino entertainment brand.
Currently, Hard Rock Casino entails a 100,000-sq-ft casino, 5,000 sq. ft. of restaurant space, a 1,000-seat show theatre, and a multi-level parkade with 1,650 vehicle stalls.
